Of all the challenges a leader confronts, and must manage, foreign policy is the greatest and most complex, and probably the most essential to get right. This is true for many reasons, but a fundamental one is that foreign policy begins at home, with domestic policy, and the way we govern ourselves, individually and as a nation. The way we manage our society and define ourselves as a nation, determines how we are viewed by others outside America, and as a result, how we are treated. As any astute leader knows, you have to define yourself before others define you, or chances are you won’t be happy with their definition, and you won’t like the way you are treated. The answer to how we define ourselves and our raison d’etre has not changed in almost 250 years, and can be found in the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.
